Taking shelter during a storm. If a tornado strikes, Ada residents can take cover in one of several public storm shelters on the East Central University campus. Shelters are located in the Horace Mann Building, the Old Science Hall and the Chickasaw Business and Conference Center, and the easiest access is by East Main Street. Please note, Mercy Hospital is not a shelter. Residents should not wait for sirens or a tornado warning, according to Gene Linton, director of emergency management for the city of Ada. Instead, they should monitor the weather and take shelter early at their discretion. Those who are unable to make it to a public shelter should go to an interior room with no windows on the lowest level of their home, and they should use headgear if it is available. Residents who want to register their storm shelters should call Linton at (580) 436-8015. Linton said people should monitor weather for local information and consider buying a NOAA weather radio if they don’t already own one. People should also remember to keep batteries and flashlights handy. Contact Linton for additional information.
